Eureka. Humboldt Co. Cal. Jan'y 29th, 1865 Hon. Richard Yates

Sir I would ask a favour of you as of a former acquaintance, I will tell you where I became aware of your worth, it was when you was a Student and a graduate at Ill. College. I then lived in President Beecher's family, and studied there a little, being poor I have had to work, I came to Cal'a in /49 and made money, but in consequence of going a worthy Gentleman's bond in a law suit in which he was swindled, we where the loosers. I could also tell you of the loss of my Mother & Family on the Plains in /51, together with the loss of a great deal of property, but would refer your honor to my friends, M. Henderson, Representative from Oregon, also Senator G.H. Williams from same state, who I believe will aid me in what I ask of you.

It is to an Office in this State such as one as Port Inspector at this (Humboldt Bay) or some other position of like value without very heavy [bonds?]; or Collector of Internal Revenue for this district. I have been Enrolling Officer of this Dist last year but have got through.

ones may be [retained?] in Office, as to my politics, I voted for Fremont in 1850, and President Lincoln both terms because I know that "Eternal vigilance is the price of Liberty." I have also been in Military Service in Oregon and if you should ask for further reference, I would gladly give it, but trusting that you will aid one who has long respected you as a Friend I Remain Yours Most Respectfully James Clark

Hon Richard Yates.

P.S. Allow me to congratulate you on your Election to the U.S. Senate and it would give me pleasure to vote for you for President. JC
