Hon Rich [illegible symbol] Yates Us. S. S.

Dear Sir.,

Thinking it probable, and as some warm friends of the Govt now think proper, that a change in the appointee to the office of Surveyor of the Port Alton be made. I write requesting your assistance in securing the appointment for me.

The accompanying recommendation prepared by my friends is perhaps a sufficient voucher to those who know the friends of the Govt. in Alton, and I do not wish to offer any reasons why I should be appointed, or the present incumbent removed. I do not feel that I have done anything more than my duty to the country in this time of peril.

Yours Respectfully

James Newman.

(over)----

Gov. Yates,

Mr. Newman has labored hard in this county and being worthy otherwise, should receive the within appointment.
