Head Quarters [ineligible] Brig [ineligible] [Cav Div MDW?] Near Mt Olive NC April 9th 1865 Dear Sir: I am just informed by Genl Kilpatrick that the Report of Maj Genl Sherman of his campaign through the Carolinas is accompanied by a strong recommendation on the part of Genl Kilpatrick approved by Gen Sherman for my promotion to the rank of a full Brigadier Having earned these recommendations by the hardest field service I am greatly in hopes they will secure my promotion. Having been my constant friend since I entered the service I am assured I shall again have your influences. May I ask you also to urge the promotion of Genl Kilpatrick as his promotion to Major Genl will make soon for my promotion. This army is wild with enthusiasm over the news of Grant's victories on the [gamut?] A little while yet and the great rebellion is a thing of the past and liberty secured wherever the flag of Washington floats.
