With Jas. S. Poage letter 5/22/65

New Boston May 22nd. 1865

Hon. Richard Yates,

Dear Sir,

I have always understood that Republics ware grateful; but I have not found our Republic so grateful in my case as I desire. Having always learned that you favoured the soldiers, I address you now to ask for your influence. Gen. Harding our member of Congress from this district; is not willing to do anything for me. I believe that you will.

I want to be Post Master at New Boston Mercer Co, Ills. Do you ask what claims I have? This is all the claim. When the war commenced I enlisted, and went in Co. I. 17th Regt. Ills., Volunteers, (The first company from this county) and was in the Battle of Fredericktown, Mo. - was wounded there and had my leg amputated. Is that a good claim? The present occupant

of the Post Office has done nothing for his country like that. He has not been in the army, and is an able bodied man.

I need the office to support my family. One Pettions have been sent on, but it availed nothing. The soldiers have always said that Dick Yates was their friend. I have believed them. Shall I still continue to believe?

As you don't know me, I will get Hon. Jas. S. Poage the Presidential Elector from this District to write for me to you. He can tell you whether or not I have the reputation of being qualified for the position.

Yours Truly Joseph H. Cain
