His Excellency Richard Yates

Governor of Illinois Springfield

Sir!

Arrived from Germany some few days ago I take the liberty to send your these lines. -

I have got a thousand (1000) men of Infantry between 20 and 35 years of age and who nearly all have seen service at Europe. - These men want to {joine?] the United States Army if the passage to New York can be paid in advance out of the States Bounty. - The passage with a Steamer from Hamburgh to New York will be about $40.00 in gold for each men, and from the different places in the country where the men are to Hamburgh about $4. I have got recommendations letter from Bradford R. Wood. United States minister of Copenhagen to Hon: Wm H. Seward Secretary of State of Washington. I also have a letter to the Secretary of war, but I thought this project can better be [arranged?] through the governor of the State.

I have served the United States since the war broke out until in January resigned my commission as Captain of Co I 82 Ills Vol. and went to see my family at Denmark.

If your Excellency will accept those men and give me the command of the Regiment please give me information and the men will be here within six weeks. --

Hoping to receive your answer I remain most Respectfully

Your obedient Servant,

Ivan Alan Weid

Care of Mr I [Laugenbery?] Essex Street N. 102 N.Y.
