with recommendation for Jeremiah Porter 10/9/61

Engineer Office

Cain, 9th Oct. 1861.

Hon. Richard Yates

Governor of Illinois,

Dear Sir.

I beg to recommend Rev. Jeremiah Porter of Chicago for appointment as Chaplain of the Artillery Battalion here (or other post of the same kind which may be in your gift.)

I know Mr. Porter well and am sure he has the qualities which fit him for great use fullness as Chaplain. If appointed I have no doubt he will enter with zeal upon his duties, with an earnest desire to do good. His manner will

will commend him to the regard and excite the respect of the soldiers. He will be assiduous and will I think acquire a strong influence for good. His earnest piety no one who knows him can doubt. As chaplain he will be the right man in the right place.

Very respectfully
