Dixon, Ilinois Sep 11th 1863

Gov Gates,

Dr Sir:

I have in contemplation in connection with the Union central committees of Ogle, Carroll and Whiteside Counties arranging for a Union Mass Meeting to be held at Dixon (a central railroad point) on or about the 15th or 17th of October next. All we want to know, to make it one of the largest meetings ever held in this far (famed?) Rock River Valley, is to have the privilege of announcing positively you as a speaker on that occasion. You have never since the memorabale campaign of 1860 spoken in this section. Let me assure you, right through this "neck of the woods", you can count your friends and unflinching support from the children up, and we desire above all things to hear you once more for the cause of the Union and universal freedom.

Hoping yo hear from you soon and favorably. I am, very truly yours, J. L. Carufs. D.
