and Letters of Credit, available anywhere on the Continent of Europe, granted.

Especial attention given to Collections, and prompt remittances made.

Where such collections are payable at other places than Chicago, I will not hold myself responsible for the acts of Correspondents. I send such collections to the same Correspondents to whom I should send my own collections -- parties in whom I have confidence. Collections are made in United States Treasury Notes, unless otherwise directed, and my liability is only for faithfully accounting for them, as a Special Deposit, to be returned, not in the same, but in like U.S. Treasury Notes.

I can assume no further or greater responsibility. I make collections only on these conditions.

My dear Sir: I was this day told that Judge Caton was about to resign, and that Mr. Beckwith reports that he is to be appointed in his place, if he wants it. You will recollect the conversation I once had with you upon the subject of the contingency of such a vacancy. Should it occur, I trust you will not forget the purpose of our conversation. If you have leisure, I should like to hear from you in reply.

Yours truly,
