His Excellency Richd Yates Gov. of Ills

                Dear Governor
I learn that you are to be here on Tuesday at the opening of the Fair. I am glad. I shall (go?) to the Lindell Mer. Come now. The best soon in your house. for the noblest man in the west.
I will know by that time whether my request for the discharge of an Ills soldier to accept my clerkship be granted at Washington or not- I was sorry the gentleman you sent me did not feel willing to accept the place - And got to think it would not have suited him well-
But all else when I see you-
                                          Very Respectfully
                                                        Your Obt Servt
                                                                             Wm S Pope
