Hon Geo W. Rives

Sir.

Should any difficulty arise in procuring the Commission for a Captain of Co E. 12th Ill Inft. you are at liberty to use this letter in securing the said commission to 1st Sergeant Geo Hunt. My term of service as 1st Lt in Co. E 12th Ill Inf expires August 1st 1864 And I respectfully decline the promotion to a captaincy of said Co. now vacant by reason of promotion of Capt. H. Van Sellar. I have been serving in the Signal Corps for over sixteen months and have been examined and recommended for promotion in it. I prefer the latter branch of the service to the Infantry

I am very Respectfully

Your Obd't. Serv't

W. C. Magner

1st Lt 12th Ill Inf and Act. Sig Off.
