Gov. Yates:

Der Sir:

Please pardon the delay in replying to yours of last month. I have been much occupied in my Canvass, & have waited to see what our nominations would be before giving you my impression of the situation in this county & Madison. At the time of your writing Mr. Metcalf of Madison was already our Candidate for State Senator. - a fact you seemed to have overlooked. We have [bought?] out Col Niles & Col Thomas for the House from this County

besides a County ticket exceedingly Strong. I am clear that Niles & Thomas are the strongest men we could have selected for Representatives, & that they will give positive help to the State Senatorial ticket. For myself, I have arranged for a thorough, & rather special canvass of Madison. I shall spend the whole of week after next in that County, speaking daily or twice a day in the principal Precincts, & shall probably, farther along, address other meetings in the same county.

I am pleased to see that Gen Oglesby & yourself are posted for meetings at Edwardsville & Belleville on the 30 inst & 1st of Oct. Why not have

a meeting the next Monday Oct 3 in Waterloo in Monroe county? I know no place where a large meeting would be more likely to be fruitful of results on the State ticket. Waterloo is 17 miles from Belleville. I only offer this as a suggestion: I do not request that it be done, if it interferes at all with the general arraingments of the canvass. I think Madison & St. Clair will go straight Union together. But this is opinion. No false confidence is to be indulged - no legitimate effort spared.

Yours resply

J Baker
