State of Louisiana, Executive Department.

New Orleans, 15 January 1864.

Honorable.

Richard Yates.

U. S. Senator from Illinois,

Springfield Illinois,

My Dear Sir.

Allow me to congratulate you upon your election as Senator from Illinois. The meeting of the Illinois Officers now here was very unanimous in wishing so desirable an object and the records were officially seat you by them. They were published in all the papers here at the time. I enclose you a little Editorial that I put in to the "True Delta" of this morning the organ of the Governor and of "all of us"

Personal.

Ex-Gov. Richard Yates, of Illinois, has just been elected United States Senator from that State for six years, from the 4th of March. Gov. Yates is favorably known to all the volunteers of the Prairie State as the soldier's friend, and his name, with that of Morton, of Indiana will be cherished by them for years. Senator Yates is a firm friend of President Lincoln and his administration, and one of the most earnest supporters of the measure to readmit Louisiana as a State.

here, and no one is more heartily rejoiced at the result of our Election in Illinois than Governor Hahn who wishes to be warmly remembered to both yourself and Mrs Yates and who wishes me to tender to you his warmest congratulations.

I hate to trouble you Governor upon a personal matter but I would much like to be continued as a Member of Governor Oglesby's staff the same as I was upon your own. Of course I want no pay and I am only too willing to at all times aid to the extent of my power in any way an Illinois Officer or Soldier as I think they will all, who have ever gone through here or through New York, bear me witness, and if it is not too much trouble Can I request you to speak to the Governor or to General Haynie who will

will recollect me I think very well at Chicago. Please remember me to Colonel Loomis and Colonel Snyder.

And believe me Always.

Yours Very Truly.

James. T. Tucker.

The Springfield (Ill.) correspondent of the Democrat writes:

"The friends of Governor Yates are forming a powerful combination for future political purposes. Governor Yates is to be rallied around as the future candidate of the Northwest for the Presidency. His friends now proclaim him as fully installed as the legitimate successor of Douglas, and as a man whose destiny in the future is predetermined by his successful career hitherto.

As it was being converyed from the boat, the clerk informed the receiving clerk of the wharf-boat that there was no bill of lading for it, as a man who had come up on the boat had charge of it, and would "see to it." The boat having discharged her Cairo freight, took her departure. Other boats arrived during the night and discharged freight, among which was a considerable amount of cotton, which was transferred to the levee, and by accident so piled as to block the way to and hide from view the box containing
