Description

Nadine Turchin was a Russian immigrant and the wife of Civil War General John Basil Turchin. The Turchins came to the United States in 1856 and would eventually settle in Mattoon, Illinois. Nadine traveled with her husband during his Civil War service with the XV Corps. Her year-long diary describes her observations and experiences during this time, including the battles at Chickamauga, Georgia and Chattanooga, Tennessee. After the war, the Turchins lived in Radom, Illinois.
