Hon Richard Yates

Gov of Illinois

Sir

It is now going for six years since I left Virginia, and consequently that long since we have met, but upon the score of old acquaintance I presume to ask a favor from your hands, as thus,

I have a son in the city of Philadelphia that has recently commenced the Practice of the Law, you and I are both aware of the many difficulties attending all young men in embarking in any profession, particularly that of Law, I would therefore request of you to appoint him a "Commissioner for Illinois,"

Now I am not of opinion that this will prove of vast pecuniary benefit to him but the appointment would give him a standing in the public eye, which without it he might not immediately arrive it, and again, Office, excites ambition.

If Compliance with my request meets your approbation you will have the kindness to forward the commission to

"George W. A. Hathwell

Atty at Law No 605 Lansom St

Philadelphia"

and the favor will be duly appreciated by me, I am ready to meet any expense attending this

Wishing you every enjoyment privately and politically

I have the honor to be

very respectfully & fraternally,

your obt servt

This man cannot be appointed because there is no vacancy - and the number is limited. Perhaps you better direct this letter to be answered - if you care anything about the writer Yours &c.
