A landscape view shows the location where Ulysses S. Grant wrote his first military orders.

On verso: "Grant's first camp when commanding the Twenty-first Illinois Inft, at New Salem in May 1861. The only regiment that left Springfield on foot, being short of transportation. The peculiar shaped tree shown in the picture is where Grant, his son, and the owner of the farm sat while discussing the issue of the war."
