Dear Fred;

I just now received the inclosed letter from Capt Kennicott, I send it to you because I hav'nt time to write full particulars before the Springfield mail closes.

I would willingly have sacrificed every thing I possess if His Excellency could have received the petition before Col Osborne was appointed - There may be some hope yet. I do so wish that His Excellency knew the true state of things. If Col Osborne is allowed the command there is no hope for the Regiment. I have heard from several of the officers of the 39th directly, & through reliable persons, that most of the would resign if Osborne was appointed Col, The fact that the Regt is even now nearly split to pieces is evidence of its fate. Its too bad when you could have made the 39th not only the pride of Illinois but of the whole volunteer service.

I'll write again by Monday.

John.
