Description

The backside of the James and Katherine Lemen monument includes an inscription which reads: "James Lemen; Born in Virginia, Nov. 20, 1760; Died in Illinois, Jan 8, 1823. A Revolutionary soldier, Indian fighter, Anti-slavery leader; Baptist minister and organizer of the first Baptist churches in Illinois. His wife, Katherine Ogle; Born in Virginia Jan 14, 1764; Died in Illinois July 15, 1848. Erected by the Baptists of Illinois, his descendents and other patriotic citizens. 1909"

On verso: "This monument, erected by the Illinois Baptist State Convention, marks the grave of James Lemen, Sr."
