Governor of the State of Illinois

The undersigned officers in the service of the United States having been acquainted for sixteen months past with Captain Edward T. Wallace and being intimately associated with him during that time would respectfully recommend him for an appointment as Field Officer in one of the regiments of Volunteers in the State of Illinois.

Captain Wallace is a citizen of Coles County in Illinois but being in business in the State of Indiana at the outbreak of the rebellion, he joined the 11th Regiment Indiana Volunteers (Zouaves) served with it in Virginia, in Kentucky and Tennessee, was present at the battles of Fort Henry, Donnelson Shiloh, and has since served upon the Staff of Major Genl. Lewis Wallace.

The undersigned feel assured that his appointment would give satisfaction to all concerned if such appointment would be conferred on him
