To Hon. R. Yates Sir

Will you confer a favor by sending me a pass, or transportation ticket from this place to Washington D.C. to rejoin my Regt the 39th Ills Vol Col Osburn, Company C, Capt John Gray of Pontiac Ills. I came home upon a furlough given by order of Brig Gen. Kelley at Cumberland Md. I cannot return without a pass, as it is impossible for me to collect money [illegible] me here, and as I cant go without I hope you will send an order for transportation.

I believe our regt is at Alexandria Va. I have written once before to you for a pass but have recieved no answer.

I have the honor to remain your Servt Sergeant H. J. Atwater Co. C 39th Ill Vol
