Sir

I take great pleasure in recommending to your notice for an appointment in one of the new regiments now being raised in Illinois, Capt John W Rigby of the 31st Illinois Volunteers. He is a brave officer and a gentleman; he served through the Mexican War and has been in battle at Belmont, Fort Donelson and Shiloh, and distinguished himself for his great coolness and bravery, he was wounded at Fort Donelson and Belmont.

Any favor shown Capt Rigby will be thankfully received.
