Hon. Richard Yates
Springfield.
Dr. Sir
Mr John C. Grier of this City, the father Capt. D. P. Grier of the 8d Missouri will hand you this
Capt Grief is one of the finest officers from this part of the State and has the entire confidence of all who know him It would be gratifying to all our Citizens if through your influence he could be transferred to take command as Colonel of one of the new regiments to be raised at home. There is no one whose name would inspire more enthusiasm in this county and around whom our young men would be more apt
to rally
His father will explain his reasons for wanting to resign his present office Illinois wants to be officered by her own gallant men and you can not do a better Service for this part of the State in the organization of new regiments, than by giving commissions to such men as Capt. D. P. Grier to command them.
I trust therefore you will take this matter under favorable consideration and render Mr Grier such assistance as may be in your power, to render certain the transfer of his son
Yours very truly
