Sir

The bearer hereof William H. Ashburn a private of Company "K" 2nd Illinois Cavalry, having lost two horses in the Service, one - having been stolen while at Columbus, by the enemy. the other having died; - is desirous of going to his home in Illinois to procure another. As he is entirely unable to perform the duties of a Cavalry Soldier without a horse and there being no Chance to procure one it is urgently desired that he may be permitted to go. I have the honor to be
