Hon. Richard Yates Dr Sir
My friend Wm F. D. Wolf is willing to give him self for the great cause and I rejoice to see such men coming forward - He has already lost a son who received a mortal would at the battle of Williamsburgh and now he desires to go himself. He is a man whose whole soul is in the [illegible] and who will be true to the death
I believe he would like to be Major - and his age - and talent - would seem to render such a position appropriate or a higher one - I hope you will find a fitting place for him -
Very Truly Yours E. C. Larned
