Col John Moses
Dear Sir
I arrived here yesterday, & am now waiting for a Steamer.
I have had an interview with Genl Strong who wished me "God Speed" in my "Holy efforts." He could give me no information in reference to Buckmaster & Associates, but refered me to Col Moses, who informs to me that Buckmaster was here on or about the 1st of July & that the parties with him Stated that they were going up the Tenn, but Col M. & Mr Austin of the Tribune, think they have gone to Memphis & advise my going to M – first - if
they are not there, I shall return to Columbus, & so on to Corinth, or till I find the [Genl.?] I have another object in going to Memphis to day. I am in company with a “Golden Circle” agent - “When with the Romans &c” - from M I will write [illegible] & give you what information I gather in route.
The [illegible] makes his Headquarters at Memphis.
Col Moses told me that if he had the proper authority he could raise one Regiment, & thinks two. If you have any instructions which you desire me to have immediately, please address me at Memphis, as, while there it will be best for me to see as to the wants of our Regiments – at that visit – which may take a day or two
Fearing the Gov may be absent, I take the liberty of addressing this to you
Respectfully Yours &c
