Gov. Yates.

Dr. Sr. I have been repeatedly informed by both friends of both of us, whose veracity is above all question, that a miscreant by the name of Belzer, sojourning at Cairo, indulges in habitual abuse of both you and myself, particularly me. I know him not, unless I saw him in your office at Springfield, Ill. I have no acquaintance with him. I am told he is one of your employees; hence I have denounced his slanderer's treachery to you that you may deal with him according to his demerit.

Your friend &

John A. McClernand.
