Dear Governor

Be kind enough to consider my name among the numerous applicants to command the new infantry regiments to be raised in our state. I prefer the infantry service to the Cavalry and as I have seen active service I do not know but what you would give me a favorable consideration.

Your letter to the President met with a response from every loyal heart. There are now but two parties in [this?] [illegible]. Unconditional union and quasi secessionist.

The blow aimed at the enemies of the government should be quick and terrible and every available means should be employed for that purpose.

Your letter but reflects the great voice of the people whose Governor you are, and it is well that the President should be reminded that the people want no half way dealings with traitors.

If you should think me competent please inform me as soon as practicable that I may prepare. I should be glad to assist in raising the people but my duty is here, and here I shall remain unless you see proper to call me to another branch of service.
