Battle Creek Tenna July 23rd 1862
Hon Richard Yates
Gov of The State of Illinois
Dear Sir
I most Respectfully request of Your Exilency - my transfer from my present position - to a position as A Field or Staff Officer in Some of the new Regiments now being formed in your State. I have been in Command of Company A. of the Regiment over Six months. By constant Study & Strict attention to my Duties I feel myself competant to ocupy a higher position than I now do. I commanded my company in the Battle of Shiloh and also at Corinth. I have had The experience of 11 months in the Service and can produce the recommendations of all my Brigade as well as my Regimental officers - as to my qualification and Standing. My reasons for making the request are there is no chance for promotion here, and having received a Severe hurt in the breast at the Battle of Shiloh I have been advised to go North for a while, and not wishing to leave the
Service of My Country in this critical moment, I ask you most Respectfully to consider my request. My Refferences are Col E. N. Kirk the Col of our Regt. who commanded the Fifth Brigade in the Battle of Shiloh, Col F. S. Stammbaugh Col of the 77th Penna Regt who now commands the Fifth Brigade or any of the members of their Staffs, as well as the officers in our Regiment. Your compliance with the above request will be most greatfully received by your
Humble Servant
