His Excellency Gov. Yates
Springfield Ill.
Dear Sir.
R. R. Townes, Assistant Adjutant General, in Gen. John A. Logan's brigade, writes me that he is applicant for the Office of Lieut. Colonel in one of the new Regiments now being raised in the State. I do not flatter myself that I can be of any assistance to him in the premises. But as he requests me to write to your Excellency in his behalf, I take pleasure in bearing testimony to the fact that all I have ever known or heard of Mr. Townes is decidedly in his favor, and I do not doubt that his appointment would be eminently a proper one, and well deserved by Gallant
conduct in the field. Gen Logan, hower, and his other brother officers in the field can Speak with more propriety and better knowledge of the qualifications, and soldierly bearing of Mr. Townes, and I am told that they all willingly bear testimony in his favor.
I have the honor to be
Very Respectfully
