Hon Richard Yates

Springfield Ills

Governor

I address you a line simply to notify you that Capt James J Dollins of Franklin Co. who I have learned Since my arrival hare is an applicant for Col or Some [other?] position in the new Regts being formed in Illinois, is for the new Constitution or has so expressed himself here but has not voted at all. he is particularly Severe on Gov Yates as a man and condemns his cause in relation to

to the conduct of the war in severe and not very dignified language

Capt Dollins is my personal friend and I do this not in a spirit of hostility to him, but such men are more dangerous in my opinion when in position in the army and catering to these Secessionist than if left at home at best he is a dangerous friend

Lieut Fittz is a different man whose whole energy is in the war by his influence the entire Co is in favor of the Old Constitution. he has shown himself a man on every battlefield from Belmont up to this time, and should you determine to give

Franklin Co a field officer he will do more for the Union cause than any man in that County

I will in a few days resign the position which I hold in the army and return home. I cannot serve under Genl McClernand or Col Lawler.

hoping that this Rebellion will son be crushed

I Remain
