Headquarters 14th Reg. Ill. Volunteers

Near Memphis, Tenn. Aug. 9. 1862.

His Excellency, Governor Yates -

Sir:

This is to bring to your favorable notice, for deserved promotion, 2nd Lieutenant Lauren W. Coe. Co II 14th Reg. Ill. Volunteers. He would desire the appointment of Major in some one of the Regiments now forming in Illinois.

I have been acquainted with Lieut. Coe ever since our Regimental organization, and have always found him a gentlemanly, energetic and reliable officer. Having proven himself such, both in camp and on the battlefield I believe his appointment to the position above named will be alike just to himself as well as creditable to the 14th Regiment and to the Soldiery of our noble State. Throughout the battle of Shiloh, he was weighed but not found wanting in whatever goes toward making a good soldier and officer.

Very Respectfully,

Your obedient servant

Cyrus Hall Col

Comdg 14th Regt.
