Gov Richard Yates

Dr Sir -

I write to you for information and also to request the privilege of raising a Company of Volunteers for the War - How many more men are needed to fill our quota and how long a time will you allow me to raise a Company-? If more men are needed and the fact is known it will be easy to raise another Company in this County - No knowing the full address of the Adjutant Genl I write to you hoping to receive an answer soon - I am practicing Law in Carrollton and can give you abundant references as

to my character and abilities If the time is too short for me to raise a Company I should be pleased to have some appointment where I can best serve my Country - I opposed your election but am happy now to coincide with you in your views and efforts to put down this atrocious rebellion - The Statement made by the Adjutant Gen has done mischief in this County so far as Volunteering is Concerned but if it is known that still more men are needed the people are ready to turn out. I have been using my best exertions to promote the cause and a thorough good feeling among the people and shall continue to do so With much respect I remain Yours truly
