His Excellency Govr Yates

Springfield Ill.

Sir.

Judge Caton having recently gone to the copper region of Lake Superior and not yet returned, and having entrusted his correspondence to me in the interim, it becomes my duty to acknowledge the receipt of your communication of the 18th inst. relating to the negligence and want of respect of the telegraph operator at Springfield. I am very certain that Judge Caton will disapprove of such conduct, and as he will return in a very few days (certainly by Sep 1st) I have deemed it best to advise your Excellency of his absence, and of my intention, if it meets your approbation to let this matter rest until his return, feeling confident that you will regard (with my self) a case of this character, as one that should not be committed to a subordinate officer

officer of the telegraph Company, under such circumstances

With great respect

I remain Sir

Your Obedient Servant

Thos Bassnett

Secretary
