Sir

I herewith enclose letters of recommendation, for the Colonelcy of some one of the new Regiments now organizing. I will state that owing to the wound received by Col Morrison at the commencement of the engagement at Fort Donelson and his continued ill health has left me in command of the Regiment a greater portion of the time, thus leaving the drilling and discipline of the Regiment to me, and the command of the same at Donelson after Col M was wounded and at Shiloh, I might say that I feel warranted, in applying for the management of a


new Regiment. Hoping that you will be able to grant my request I remain your
