Sir. At the Battle of Shiloh, I the undersigned, A Sergeant of Co I 61st Ill Vol. lost my right arm at the shoulder joint. Now in part have gained my strength. I am desirous of getting into government employ in a capacity suited to my crippled condition. For this purpose I go to Washington to-night. Will you Sir. aid me by writing a letter of recommendation to President Lincoln. addressed to myself. Washington D.C. I carry with me letters, to Mr L. from some of my best friends among whom are the names of P. Judson, [Gen J?] White, Col Farnsworth, Maj Beveridge, Mr J B Merwin &c. I am twenty one years of age. Four years ago


I engaged myself for one year. as Cashier in a Chicago house. When my time expired entered Evanston University where I remained until Enlistment.
