Hon Richard Yates

Governor of Ills

Dr Sir by the hand of my son who I hope will be introduced favorably to, I would say to you, after living here for nearly a half century and braving the storms of life standing politically identified - with my whole family - with the whig & republublican party, I would say to you as the chief magistrate of the State open rebellion to the government is becoming more bold in our county as a proof of it they sawed down the flag pole on the streets of our Town one night last week - two or three men just after the pole fell caught one of our ministers and swore he should not watch them -

A few more reverses to our arms and I give it as my opinion that open rebellion breaks out here - In the multitude of your business I should like for you to write a line to your old friend

PS. anything further that you can do for me or mine shall be gratefully remembered
