My dear Governor
This letter will introduce to you Genl B. S. Roberts an old and distinguished officer of the Army, for whom I bespeak your attention & politeness.
The object of his seeing you, you will learn from the letters he will deliver you. You can confer fully & freely with him in all confidence
[Very truly your fd?]
Jno Pope
Hon Richard Yates
Gov of Ills.
Altoona Sept 25. 62
Governor:
I arrived at this place this morning as you left, bearing to you these letters from Genl Pope. His letters will explain his views. I had wished to see & other Governors for the purpose of urging them on your attention & for the further purpose of demonstrating that General Popes Virginia campaign has been not only a success, but a great military movement that has but few examples in [his?] history. All of General McClellans succesess, if he has any, will be consequential on Popes Masterly maneuvers, and all his reverses will be laid to his delays in not supporting Pope and fighting the great battles at CentreVille and Fairfax Court House. Genl Pope should be made the commander of the entire west, if not the commander in chief of the army. It will destroy the confidence of the country in all our Generals if Pope is displaced or lowered in public estimation.
Yours truly
B. S. Roberts
Brigr Genl
Maj Gen John Pope,
with
Endorsement of Genl B. S. Roberts.
