With George William Hill 10/1/62
Department of Public Instruction,
Springfield, Ills. Oct 1, 1862
Dear Sir:
I submitted to Lt Hill your suggestion that Order #126 SS 3. did not probably apply to the Chaplaincy of old Regiments, & have received the enclosed reply. Rev Mr Merritt is here, waiting to be mustered in, having strictly complied with all other requirements. My sense of his eminent fitness for the service, induces me to ask your aid in obtaining the requisite order from Washington.
I also take the liberty to enclose a recommendation of Col T. W. Harris. Similar to one heretofore signed by Gov Yates & the other State officers, for your signature, if it should meet your views. Our friends deem it of much importance that Col H. should have the appointment. But I defer wholly
to your judgment in the matter.
In respect to the case of Mr Merritt I have much desire for a favorable reply from Washington.
I have the honor to be,
Most Respectfully yrs
N. Bateman
To
Hon F. A. Hoffman
Lt Governor
State House
P. S. Be so kind as to return the recommendation.
