Dear Sir
I am compelled by a recent injury to my arm to employ an amanuensis.
I wish to call your attention to the case of Edward Gooding. a son of our much respected fellow citizen William Gooding of Lockport, Chief Engineer of the Ills. and Mich. Canal.
The son enlisted in the Mercantile Battery of this City as a private where his capacity fits him for a position emminently more responsible. he is a gentleman of more than ordinary intelligence and business capacity. his father and friends are desirous of having him placed upon the Staff of some of the Generals of our State
if possible, or promoted to some place where he can show his ability and have an opportunity to make his mark. I therefore most cheerfully recommend to your favorable consideration the promotion of this young man, in doing which you will confer a favor upon your humble and
