Gov Yates
Sir,
My son Rowland Cox has recently left College & enlisted in the "Anderson Cavalry Troop" now near Carlisle, Pennslylvania - His education, ability, great moral principle & correct application of Military matters, fit him for the responsibilities of an officer & if desirable I will send you letters from Hon O H Browning, Judge Lawrence Hon John Wood N. Bushnell & others who have known him from childhood, who will attest this fact. It is rumoured than our glorious State is to furnish another Regt of Cavalry! Will you not appoint Rowland Cox Major in this or some other Regt
Trust me, he will do right! Illinois will never be ashamed of him! Have the goodness to reply at your earliest convenience.
Very respectfully
Anne I. Cox.
