Chicago, Illinois,
October 18th 1862
To His Excellency Richard Yates,
Governor of Illinois,
Sir:
I wish you would send at once an Assistant Surgeon to Helena, Arkansas, to help take care of the sick of the Ninth Regiment of Illinois Cavalry. Both the Surgeon & Assistant Surgeon of that Regiment are sick, and I fear that the men are actually suffering for want of attendance. The services of this Assistant Surgeon will only be temporary & as the U.S. only allow one Surgeon & one Assistant to a Regiment I think he will have to be paid by the State, however you understand this matter better than I do - Please send him at once -
