Chicago Nov. 6th 1862
To His Excellency
Richd Yates
Dear Govr
I write at your kind suggestion, to remind you, that in the multitude of your engagements and duties there is an old Illinoisan, who is a prisoner, and who feels that he never ought to have been arrested; But having been, now thinks that he ought to be honorably discharged without further mortification and embarrassment. I shall have a very humble opinion of myself, if a President who has known me for 30 years, and a Governor, with whom I have had a less lengthy, but not less pleasant acquaintance, suffered me to remain in this unpleasant condition longer. I will not take up your valuable time to read more from me
