Private

Headquarters Illinois Troops Camp Douglas Nov 11 1862

To His Excellency Governor Yates Washington D.C.

Governor

I received your kind note inviting me to join you in New York or Washington, and regretted that I did not see you, but you know I was particularly occupied in getting off the last Regiments.

I have been exerting myself untill now to get affairs here so arranged as to enable me to leave there, but find that I am now probably too late to meet you, and will have to defer my visit untill you have occasion to go to Washington

again.

I still think the Government will require more troops, and why recruiting and organizing is not continued I cannot understand.-

I have been called upon through Captain Potter ass't Q Master at Chicago, for information in regard to the history of Camp Douglas, for what purpose I do not know; But it occurred to me that you might be enquired of in the matter at Washington, and I therefore Enclose to you a copy of a hasty sketch I have drawn up for him.

I am Governor Very Respectfully Your Ob't Servant Joseph M Tucker Col. Commding

P.S If your determination is not to allow your name to be urged for appointment a major General of Vols, I certainly think you ought to have some General Officer in the US Service assigned to duty with you in the state, who would always act harmoniously with the state authorities, and he might also discharge the duties of Provost Marshal General of the state.
