Gen: Fuller:
I send you a clipping from the Chicago Times - give it a perusal if you have not done so before, and then hear what I am going to say:
A great many substantial union men demand the Surpression of this paper, because their patriotism and loyalty has been subjected to the daily outrages of such publications, as I send you: If the Gov of this State, or the President, submit to these infernal publications much longer the result is certain, that the people will believe them guilty of all that is charged.
Hundreds have be imprisoned, for Political offenses - which immediately become exalted virtues in Comparison with the sins and treasons of this Chicago Times, and there is no good reason why the same may not happen to those who utter and publish this cursed document.
Guilt or fear or both combined, must have much to do in sparing this execrable devil from the whole list of pains and penalties attached to the meanest of all the types of Treason.
Henceforth good and loyal citizens will have but little disposition to fight for the government of the State or Nation when these governments permit the continuation of such vile treachery, when & where they may easily put it down:
Now Sir Since our Troops are all gone into the field from this State - and I could not be Recommissioned because I had Resigned - I ask permission to "Raise a Company" to put down the Chicago Times, and I only ask that the government accept our services and furnish transportation to and from the scene of Operations - I believe it would be the most important achievement, that could befall our [Arms? ] -
Yours Respectfully
John S. Wolfe
