His Ex
Richard Yates Gov &c
My dear Sir
Col David Stuart of the 55th Ills Regt. has been strongly recommended by Maj Genl Sherman to promotion as Brig Genl.
This is a thoroughly just & well deserved compliment to so faithful brave efficient & accomplished an Officer as Col Stuart who has never been absent a day from his Command & whose Regt is not excelled in order & discipline by any in the Army.
It is believed by some of Col Stuart's best friends that a letter in his favor to the Prest from you setting forth that only which he is so well entitled to have stated in his behalf would secure him the promotion desired & so well deserved.
May I hope that it will be your pleasure to promote his interests in this occasion.
Very Truly Yours
WB. Ogden
