Mr Henry F Hale
Dear Sir
Yours of the 1st Inst is recd. I am glad to learn that you think of returning to the service - all who can leave their home & families should do so in the present crisis - the more we have of brave hearts & strong arms in the work the sooner will it be finished. I would like to see you enter the army with such position as would enable you to be of the most service. As Lieutenant you have done well - you could fill with credit and advantage to the service a post as Captain of a Company - Regimental adjutant - Quarter Master - or Commissary - but qualification is not always looked after by those making appointments Consequently many important posts are filled in the Army by persons possessing no qualifications whatever.
In the volunteer service it is difficult (you are aware) to obtain a position unless you have aided in the organization. You might get a position possibly in some of the new Regiments now organizing. If not, you might make application for the appointment of Lieut in the Regular Army - or Commissary or Q Master - For either of which I would give any assistance in my power. Our movements are slow - at present my Division is engaged in repairing the Railroad south of this - We may be able to go forward in four or five days. The health of the Command is good. Please remember me to my friends in Havana. Say to Mr Andrus that I intend to write him soon - when I have some news. I would like to hear from him very much.
I remain truly your friend &c
