Edwardsville 21st Jany 1863

To his Excellency R Yates

Dr Sir I take great pleasure in recommending to your favourable consideration Mr J W Schweppe of Alton as a suitable person to fill the office of Director of the Deaf & Dumb Assylum made vacant as I understand by the resignation of G T Brown Mr Schweppe is a gentleman of first rate accomplishments, of unblemished moral and business character, of unswerving loyalty and an ardent republican. He is in every respect fitted to adorn the position sought for for him by his friends If it is in your power I hope you will confer the office upon him as I know of no one who would more worthily discharge its duties Gov Hoffman is well acquainted with him.

Your friend truly J. Gillespie
