His Excellency Governor Yates

Dear Sir

I am quite unwell today and will not therefore come to Springfield

I would be glad to hear this evening by mail the final result of your deliberations upon the state of the country

The union men here are much alarmed and I am ashamed to say so much depressed that they cannot be relied on for any bold movement

These facts are so discolored by their fears that there is no reliance upon them

I am still of opinion that the only mode of reassuring our People is a military force to be placed in Springfield

Verry respectfully

John M. Palmer
