Evanston April 16, 1863.
Gov Yates
Most Honored Sir
I take the freedom as one of those over whom you hold jurisdiction, to write you on behalf of a suffering defender of his country. I know yours is valuable time and I will be as concise as the case will admit of. I know to the deception used often by officious pleaders for official favors. This is an honest appeal to your humanity, and a line to the Physician in question will verify my Statements.
The individual in question is an Illinoisian by name John New, and a young man He is a member of Col Farnsworths 8th Ills Cavaly Regt; having enlisted
at the formation of the Regt. Naturally delicate the Service has entirely prostrated his energies and has been confined in the Calvert St Hospital, Baltimore since the 6. Sept. 1862.
The Physiciasn tell him they can do nothing for him. in any shape or manner and being continually losing, he has written to you a few days ago asking for his discharge if it can be had. fore some unaccountable reason he cannot get it where he is. [Nonfit?] for service a burden to the government he feels entitled to relief.
I believe you have the power, if you would, procure his discharge if possible, or at least grant him a transfer to
some point at home that those interested in his welfare may ease his lot, while they may.
Believing you will not pass our request by and waiting anxiously for an answer
