Newton, Ills., May 3rd 1863
Gov. Yates-
Sir:- I have a brother, (B.M. Bridges) at the parole camp-Benton Barracks, Mo., who belongs to Co K, 38th Ills vols., and who was made a prisoner at the battle of Stone River. He has been in the service since August '61. He requests me to write you, and ask if you could aid him in procuring a furlough for a few days to visit home previous to an exchange. I know there are thousands as desiring as he who are in active service and cannot visit their homes. He is so near, and until an
exchange is effected- of no service to his government.
I had but two brothers-at the begining of the struggle for the nation's life, they volunteered- then I was proud of them. One long since yielded up his life for the glorious cause. -the condition of the other I have stated. Could you do anything for him?
I enclose his address and stamp. Will you please address your reply to him?
I am very respectfully
your humble serv't
T. H. B. Bridges.
