Dr Sir

The bearer this Mr. Y. M. Shackleford is a man in every Respect worthy of your confidence, and although I have not the honor of a personal acquaintance with you permit me to Recommend Mr. Shackleford as a true and unconditional Union man. he was compelled to leave his house in Tennessee on account of his adherence to the Union Cause. and having left all his means he wishes a position from you in which he may be useful to his country and by which he may be able to support his family
